Assessment and Evaluation

Exams:

  • In Phase 1, quizzes, midterms, final exams, and make-up exams are held for the Faculty of Medicine courses. In Phase 2, a written, oral and skill exams are held at the end of the education semester, and a make-up exam is held at the end of the year for unsuccessful students. The time of the final and make-up exams is determined by the University Senate and announced in the Academic Calendar.
  • Courses and their exams can be held on any day of the week.
  • Exams are performed in written and/or oral, theoretical and/or practical forms.
  • Students must take the exams on the announced date and time. The grade of the student is considered zero if the student does not attend any of the theoretical and practical parts of the exam without an excuse or does not take the exam on time.
  • A student who cannot take the exam due to any excuse, applies to the Faculty Dean's Office within 3 weekdays at the latest as of the expiry date of the excuse, and the student whose excuse is accepted by the Executive Board is taken to the make-up exam.

Evaluation:

  • The methods to be used in measurement and evaluation and the contribution rates on success are determined and announced to the students at the beginning of the semester. Course passing grade is calculated with the contribution of various parameters obtained during and at the end of the semester defined in the evaluation criteria.
  • Courses that do not require a midterm and/or final exam are determined by the Senate upon the recommendation of the Faculty Dean.
  • Make-up exam right is warranted for the students with the right to take the exam for the relevant FoM course who has either failed or conditionally passed in the relevant semester/year.  There is no make-up examination for common core and elective courses.
  • After the make-up exams for the FoM courses, the course grade is calculated by replacing the make-up exam grade for the final exam grade.
  • Whether or not the students can take courses from the next year is determined by their overall grade point average, as well as the condition of being successful in each course they have taken so far.
  • At the end of the first year, the students who receive at least "DD" from the courses evaluated by grade and "S" from the courses evaluated by competency and with a cumulative average of at least 1.50 points, are eligible to take the second year courses. Students who have "FF", "FD", "NA" or "U" grades in the faculty core courses, even if the cumulative average point is at least 1.50, take these courses as a prerequisite and succeed before taking the second year core courses. Those who have common core courses with a grade of "FF", "FD" or "NA" are obliged to complete these courses by the end of the third year. Students who repeat the courses can take elective courses from the upper class.
  • At the end of the second year, the students who receive at least "DD" from the courses evaluated by grade and "S" from the courses evaluated by competency and with a cumulative average of at least 1.70 points, are eligible to take the third year courses. Students who have "FF", "FD", "NA" or "U" grades in the faculty core courses, even if the cumulative average point is at least 1.70, take these courses as a prerequisite and succeed before taking the third year core courses. Students who repeat the courses can take elective courses from the upper class.
  • At the end of the third year, students who received at least "DD" from all the common and elective courses evaluated by grade and have "S" from the courses evaluated by competency with an average grade point of at least 1.80 are entitled to take the fourth year courses.
  • The fourth and fifth years are evaluated as a whole. At the end of the fifth year, the students who receive at least "DD" from the courses evaluated by grade and "S" from the courses evaluated by competency and with a cumulative average of at least 2.00 points, are eligible for internship. Students are required to take the courses with a grade of "FF", "FD", "NA" or "U" in their fourth or fifth years until they succeed.
  • Sixth year courses are evaluated based on competency, and students who get an “S” grade from all of them are eligible to graduate. Those who get a "U" grade are obliged to take this course until they succeed.
  • The last grades from the repeated courses are taken into account for calculating the grade average.

The NA (non-attendance) grade is appraised by the instructor for the students who do not meet course attendance obligations and/or fulfill the course application requirements. The coefficient of the NA grade is taken as 0.00 (zero) for grade average calculations.

Grades that are not taken into account while calculating grade averages are as follows:

a) S (satisfactory) grade is given to the students who are successful in non-credit courses.

b) U (unsatisfactory) grade is given to the students who fail in non-credit courses.

c) The EX (exempt) grade is given to the students who are exempt from some courses in the curriculum.

d) I (Incomplete) grade is given to students who cannot complete the requirements for the course at the end of the semester for a valid reason accepted by the instructor. The I grade must be converted to a letter grade within one week following the deadline for the semester grades. However, in special cases, conversion to letter grades exceeding this deadline must be done before the next semester course registration starts. These procedures in special cases are carried out with the decision of the Executive Board of Faculty, upon the recommendation of the course coordinator. The grade I, which is not converted to a letter grade within the prescribed period, automatically turns into an FF or U grade.

e) W (withdrawn) grade is used for a course that is allowed to be withdrawn with the recommendation of the advisor and the permission of the lecturer, within the first ten weeks from the beginning of the semester, after the normal add and drop period for the course ends. A student cannot withdraw from; the core courses, the courses taken to upgrade, the courses must be repeated, previously received a W grade and the courses not included in the grade point average. Students can withdraw from a maximum of two elective courses during their education period. The withdrawal procedures of exchange students studying at the university within the scope of the protocols signed between the university and educational institutions or official institutions abroad can be done with the recommendation of the Directorate of IUE International Relations Office and the permission of the faculty member. The rules for grade W are not applied for students in this situation.

f) NI (grades not included in the GPA) is given to define the courses taken by the student, provided that not included in the grade point average of the program or programs enrolled. This grade is shown on the student's transcript together with the letter grade the student received from the relevant course. Courses in this status are not counted towards the courses of the program in which the student is registered.

g) P (Successful Attendance) grade is given to the students who regularly perform the academic studies expected to be done in the relevant semester in courses whose grade point averages are not included and whose duration is more than one semester.
