Izmir University of Economics Academic Research Track (IUE FoM ART)

The main purpose of the IUE Faculty of Medicine Academic Research Pathway Program (ART) is to provide students who want to do research in different fields of medicine the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to conduct medical research by providing a multidisciplinary research environment and a structured research program. Within the scope of this program, students have the opportunity to participate in scientific research activities carried out by faculty members (mentors) from our university or outside the university and/or to receive education in international environments.

Students' completion of the ART program results in the award of an IEU-Medical Faculty "ART" certificate and the demonstration of successful courses and research work carried out in the student's portfolio.

To successfully complete the Tier 1 and to get the Tier-1 certificate;

Students successfully complete three ART core courses (Basic Concepts and Tools in Scientific Research (MED215), Project Writing in Medical Sciences (MED 270), and Principles of Scientific Writing and Presentation (MED330)). It is necessary to take at least 13 ECTS within the scope of these courses.

Students can also take courses equivalent to core and elective courses from other universities or online education platforms (Lecturio, openuniversity.org, etc.) and substitute the relevant course if the ART Steering Committee approves.

Students must find a mentor for the research area they want to work in, to continue to the Tier 2 and report their mentor and project subject information to the ART management by the end of the 3rd year at the latest.

To successfully complete the Tier 2 and get the IUETF ART-Badge;

What Does "Project" Mean in the Faculty of Medicine?

In FoM, the project is a collection of activities that are not included in the curriculum, focused on general areas except of any clinical specialty. The projects are implemented out of the medical school program and in the first three years of the education period. Those who are interested in special fields among the FoM students can choose a project and get involved in it. Not all students are required to be involved in a project. Two project areas including Social Responsibility Projects and Research Programs have been determined within the scope of Izmir University of Economics Faculty of Medicine.

What is the Purpose of the Social Responsibility Project?

The purpose of the Social Responsibility Project is to enable students to develop their knowledge, experience, ability, and leadership skills in and out of the class by taking part in human- and community-oriented social projects in the context of health systems. The student who takes part in the social responsibility project will have an opinion on the social, cultural, and economic indicators of health and will be able to provide health services in their own society more competently.

Versatile personal development with a new understanding of education...

Portfolio is a collection of studies that show the student's efforts, achievements, and development in one or more areas (1). The portfolio shows the student where he/she is on the path to becoming a well-trained physician (2). It is also a tool that enables the student to demonstrate to one another the best evidence of their achievement in competencies and good medical practice. The structure of the portfolio differs from a resume due to its detail and depth.

With the help of the portfolio, students will be able to track the extent to which they have achieved specific outcomes, to assess their competencies and to make lifelong learning an attitude.

Portfolios consist of a wide range of documents related to the student's skills, knowledge, training, professionalism, and behavior. Some of these documents are listed below:

  • A report of a reading (e-book chapter, etc.) or watching (documentary, movie, video, etc.) homework,
  • A structured reflection documents written for specific situations (ethical situations, etc.) or cases (rare cases, etc.),
  • Certificates for courses,
  • Attendance documents for conferences, seminars, and workshops,
  • Video recordings of clinical or communication skills,
  • Participating and/or managing the social responsibility, clinical or scientific projects,
  • Published or accepted manuscripts or proceedings,
  • Presentations made in various events or journal clubs,
  • Developing a product (a new medical device or application, etc.).

All these documents are portfolio documents that show students' learning, performance, and development.

İzmir University of Economics Faculty of Medicine Student Portfolio  (IUEFoM Student Portfolio)

In order to assess our students achievements, observe their progress and encourage best practices, İzmir University of Economics Faculty of Medicine has fostered the use of portfolios in the Medical Curriculum.  There are 2 components of the IUEFoM Portfolio: 1) “Course Portfolio” that will make up a certain percentage of the course final note 2) “Graduation Portfolio”  in which they will collect their best evidences regarding best medical practices and skills.

IUEFoM Portfolio will be built on the E-Medicine Platform. And will be assessed at certain intervals.

The aim of the IUEFoM Portfolio is; to assess the students different interests, skills and experiences and allow them to achieve their competencies in a more personalized way and help them to boost their potentials to their highest. Instead of comparing students with each other, the IUEFoM Portfolio will contibute to the improvement of the students according to their own features.
